Thank Yor for Petting My Dog

A Quiet Walk Along the River

Last Sunday, I met a friend for coffee, and we decided to take a walk along the path near the Detroit Riverwalk. It was one of those gloomy, chilly days where the sky hangs low and the crowds stay home. Quiet. Peaceful. Just the kind of day for a slow walk and good conversation.

There weren’t many people out, but we did cross paths with someone who stopped me in my tracks—a beautiful gray pitbull wearing the cutest beaded collar and a little hoodie.

Of course, I asked if I could say hello.

A Simple Moment That Meant More

She was sweet. Gentle. Full of love. The kind of dog that leans into you like she’s known you forever.

We gave her all the attention she deserved, and her human smiled and said something that stuck with me:

“Thank you for petting her. Not many people will.”

And just like that, my heart sank a little.

The Weight of a Label

I know the stigma.

Pitbulls are labeled as aggressive. Dangerous. Unpredictable. We’ve all heard it. But after years of working with dogs, I can tell you this—those labels don’t hold up in real life.

Some of the most loving, stable dogs I’ve met have been so-called “bully breeds.” My experiences have taught me that behavior isn’t about breed—it’s about the dog in front of you.

And I still love them all.

It’s Never That Simple

What frustrates me most is how history keeps repeating itself.

In the 1970s, it was German Shepherds.
In the 1980s, it was Dobermans.
Now, it’s pitbulls.

Different decade, same story.

The truth is, there are no “bad” breeds. But there are irresponsible owners, lack of training, and environments that shape behavior in ways people don’t always understand—or take responsibility for.

I’ve seen that too. More times than I’d like.

Choosing Compassion

So, I do what I can.

I give dogs a chance. I look at the individual, not the label. I ask before I pet, I respect boundaries, and when it’s welcomed—I show them love.

Because sometimes, something as simple as petting a dog can mean more than we realize.

To that sweet girl on the riverwalk—and to her human—

You’re welcome. Always. 🐾
