Benji’s VIP Life: The Perks of Being a Pampered Dog

Benji lives a life of luxury, and he knows it! While some dogs are content with a basic bed and a tennis ball, Benji expects the finer things—because, well, he’s allowed to. His world is all about comfort and indulgence—kind of like mine. Sure, I may not have three beds to choose from, but I do enjoy the simple pleasures in life. And so does Benji.

For him, it’s snuggling, bone broth, homemade treats, and playtime while I’m doing dishes. His favorite game? Grabbing a toy from his overflowing toy box, sprinting up and down the hallway while squeaking it like a madman, then teasing me with it—because, clearly, I’m supposed to chase him. He pulls the same stunt when I’m on conference calls, just to keep things interesting.

Is Benji spoiled? Absolutely. But not in the way of a tantrum-throwing child who demands everything. No, Benji is grateful. He wags his tail like it’s his full-time job when he gets attention or a treat, and he doesn’t sulk when I tell him no. (And yes, I do tell him no—especially when he eyes my chocolate or pasta sauce loaded with garlic and onions.)

Does he live a pampered life? Kinda. He doesn’t get everything, but he does have his perks. Take our letter carrier, for example. She literally delivers joy. Every day, she tosses a treat through the mail slot and calls his name, “Who’s a good boy?” And Benji? He sits by the window, waiting. If it’s a different carrier and there’s no treat? Don’t worry—I’ve got him covered. It’s the highlight of his day. During the warmer months, when the windows are open, she even calls his name from across the street, and his little tail goes wild. Spoiled? Maybe just a little.

I don’t know what Benji’s life was like before he came into mine. But I do know he doesn’t like loud noises… or when I drop an F-bomb in my office (we’ve all had those days). The moment he hears it, he casually gets up, heads to the other room, and politely removes himself from my nonsense. Then, about 30 minutes later, I hear his little paws tiptoe down the hallway as he sneaks a peek—assessing whether the coast is clear and if I’ve finally calmed down.

I’ve always taken great care of my dogs—they deserve it. They bring so much joy into my life, and I cherish every moment. The holidays are even more special because of them. I spent my 50th birthday in Telluride, CO, with Guinness—there was no better companion. And I already have plans for my 60th with Benji. It’ll be closer to home (unless I get my hands on some top-tier doggie edibles for the car ride).

Benji deserves to be loved, spoiled, and celebrated—because he’s family. And let’s be real, with that face, how could I not?
