Slowing Down to Christmas | Cozy Apple & Pumpkin Dog Treats

My favorite time of the year. A time when darkness falls early in the northern hemisphere, and I find myself cozying into the cold months with Benji by my side.

It’s the season of glowing lights in the windows, music floating through the house, and long walks where we can see our breath in the air. I love the quiet rhythm of this time — the slowing down, the nesting, the little comforts that make home feel like magic.

As I prepare for the holidays — cookie lists, Christmas trees, and carols — I also find joy in bringing out the jars I canned over the summer. Fruits, veggies, soups… each one feels like a small gift to my future self. For Benji, that same comfort comes in the form of pumpkin and apple treats.

There’s nothing that fills the kitchen with warmth quite like baking. The smell of apples and cinnamon (just for me), and the soft crunch of oats and pumpkin for him. So today, we’re sharing a new favorite — Apple & Pumpkin Paws, an easy recipe for cozy afternoons when you just want to bake something that makes tails wag.

Apples

🐾 Apple & Pumpkin Paws

Wholesome treats that bring a little holiday cheer to your best friend.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup oat flour (or finely ground rolled oats)
  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ½ cup pumpkin purée (plain, not pie mix)
  • egg
  • Optional: a sprinkle of ground flaxseed or cinnamon (for scent only — skip if your dog is sensitive)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix all ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  3. Roll out the dough to about ¼-inch thick and cut into fun shapes — I like using small bone or paw print cutters.
  4. Place on the baking sheet and bake for 25–30 minutes, until golden and firm.
  5. Cool completely before sharing.

Store in an airtight container for up to a week, or freeze for longer freshness.

A Mindful Pause

This season, amidst the bustle and brightness, I try to make space for quiet, a slow cup of tea, a wagging tail at my feet, and the hum of the oven. That’s where the magic lives.

Here’s to slowing down, savoring the season, and filling our homes (and hearts) with warmth.
