If you know me, you know a few things are true: I love to garden, I love to cook, and I really love to eat. The other day I posted on Facebook that I think the only reason I bake is so I can lick the bowl—and honestly, that might not be far from the truth!
Now, I’ll admit it: summer is not my favorite season. I’m not a fan of hot, sticky weather. Give me cool fall mornings and crisp air any day. But you know who is enjoying the warmth? My garden. Everything is thriving right now, and the harvest is slowly rolling in. Even Benji is getting excited about it.
This year, I planted a few of Benji’s favorites—cucumbers, green beans, and carrots just for him. Every time we head outside, we make a little detour past the garden. I point out the cucumbers and green beans, and he gives them a good sniff before we move on. It’s a sweet little ritual I look forward to every day.
We do have to tread carefully around the butternut squash, though. I may have gotten a little overzealous when planting that one. It’s taken over a corner of the yard and is trying to invade the lawn. But I can’t complain too much—those baby butternuts are just too cute, and I can’t wait to roast them up in a few months.
This season got me thinking about all the fresh food I make—not just for me, but for Benji too. So, I put together a special little gift: a downloadable PDF with a handful of Benji’s favorite treat recipes. While I don’t have all the ingredients growing in my backyard (yet), they’re all simple, healthy, and easy to find at your local grocery store.
Next year, I’m toying with the idea of turning the whole backyard into a mini farm. I’m talking watermelon, potatoes, maybe even a pumpkin patch—why not dream big, right?
