Not every great adventure requires a passport—or even a car ride. Some of the best memories with your dog can happen right at home. If you’re like me, sometimes the idea of relaxing at home with Benji, without packing a suitcase or worrying about road trip logistics, sounds heavenly. That’s why I’m all about the dog-friendly staycation.

Whether you’re saving money, avoiding travel stress, or just looking for a fun way to make the most of your days off, here’s how you can create the ultimate staycation experience that you and your pup will both love.

Dog in a tent

1. Pitch a Tent – Backyard Camping with Your Pup

Set up camp in your backyard—or even your living room! Pitch a tent, roll out your sleeping bags (or dog bed), and spend the night under the stars. Don’t forget your flashlight, bug spray, and a couple of chew toys. Make it cozy with blankets, twinkle lights, and a playlist of nature sounds.

For you: toasted marshmallows and a campfire.
For your pup: frozen peanut butter-stuffed KONGs or some homemade jerky.
Bonus points if you howl at the moon together.

Doggie Spa Day

2. DIY Pup Spa Day

If your dog loves being pampered (or just tolerates it because of the treats involved), turn your staycation into a spa retreat. Give them a gentle bath with a calming shampoo, followed by a full-body towel massage. Don’t forget to brush their coat, clean their ears, and maybe even apply some paw balm.

Create a soothing spa vibe with relaxing music, lavender diffusers (pet-safe, of course), and a fluffy towel wrap. I like to pretend Benji is at a luxury dog resort—he likes to pretend it’s over as soon as the bath starts.

3. Scenic Walks and New Routes

One of the best parts of traveling is discovering new places. But who says you can’t do that close to home?

Research nearby parks or trails you’ve never visited. Try a new walking route, explore a different neighborhood, or find a dog-friendly nature preserve. Let your pup take the lead (literally) and do a little sniffari—an enriching walk where they get to stop, smell, and explore as they please.

Don’t forget the poop bags. And treats. And water. And maybe more treats.

4. At-Home Agility Course or Backyard Playground

You don’t need fancy equipment to build an obstacle course for your dog. Use what you’ve got! Broomsticks balanced on buckets make great jumps. Couch cushions can be tunnels or hurdles. Hula hoops, laundry baskets, boxes—get creative!

Run the course with your dog, cheer them on, and reward with treats. It’s not about training for a competition; it’s about having fun and building confidence. Benji loves when I act like he just won Olympic gold after a good run-through.

Dog movie night

5. Paw-some Movie Night

You bring the popcorn, your pup brings the cuddles. Make a list of your favorite dog-themed movies—like Lassie, Homeward Bound, The Secret Life of Pets, or Dog Days. Bonus points if your dog barks when the pups on screen start talking.

Create a little nest of blankets and pillows, grab some dog-safe movie snacks (Benji likes frozen blueberry bites), and relax together. I like to think he follows the plot, but really, he’s just in it for the snacks and snuggles.

6. Frozen Treat Day – DIY Pup Popsicles

What’s a staycation without snacks? Make a few frozen treats that will keep your dog cool and happy during warm weather. Try blending plain yogurt, blueberries, and a drizzle of peanut butter and pouring it into silicone molds. Freeze overnight.

Other ideas:

  • Watermelon cubes (no seeds!)
  • Frozen chicken broth cubes (dog friendly) with a bit of shredded meat
  • Mashed banana and oats in ice cube trays

These are especially fun if you want to end your spa day with a “refreshing dessert.”

7. Photo Shoot Fun

Want to really make some memories? Have a photo shoot day with your pup! Pick a theme—summer, beach vibes, silly hats, or flower crowns—and dress up your dog (and yourself, if you’re up for it). Use natural light, set up a backdrop with a sheet or a fun blanket, and take lots of photos.

Treats and patience are key here—Benji usually demands payment in advance for his modeling services.

When you’re done, share the photos with friends or post your favorites on Instagram. You can even create a little staycation photo album.

8. Mindful Moments Together

Sometimes the best part of a staycation is simply slowing down. Sit together in the yard. Read a book while your pup naps at your feet. Meditate with your dog curled next to you. Take time to enjoy each other’s company without distractions.

Benji reminds me to be present, and when I look down and see his sweet face resting near mine, I know I’m exactly where I need to be.

Final Thoughts

A staycation with your dog is about intention, connection, and joy. It’s not about doing everything, but about doing the things that make both of you feel relaxed and happy. You don’t need to board a plane to make lasting memories—you just need time, creativity, and love (and snacks—don’t forget the snacks).

So if travel isn’t in the cards this summer, don’t worry. A magical, memory-making staycation is right there at your feet—probably chewing on a squeaky toy.
