Because Benji deserves more than a bite of my fried eggs from my breakfast!
Spring is finally here — and yes, it’s showing up in full Midwest fashion: sunshine one day, cold and rainy the next. But the days are getting longer, the breeze a little warmer, and Benji is definitely spending more time outside sniffing everything in bloom.
With the season shifting, I like to bring a little spring into Benji’s diet too. That doesn’t mean fancy meals or gourmet dog bakeshops (although he wouldn’t complain) — it just means adding a few fresh, safe seasonal snacks into the mix.
Here are some dog-safe springtime treats that are easy, healthy, and Benji-approved:
🥕 Carrots
Crunchy, slightly sweet, and low in calories, carrots are a great raw snack. I’ll slice a few into sticks or rounds and toss them into Benji’s treat jar in the fridge. He loves the crunch, and I love that he thinks they’re a big deal.
Serve it: Raw, frozen, or lightly steamed.
🍓 Strawberries
Strawberries are full of antioxidants and vitamin C — and a perfect little springtime bite. Just don’t overdo it; they’re naturally sweet, and too many can upset your pup’s tummy.
Serve it: Washed, stemmed, and sliced. (Frozen slices are great too!)
🥒 Cucumbers
Hydrating and refreshing — cucumbers are a warm-weather go-to for us. I’ll slice up a few rounds while prepping salad, and Benji sits patiently knowing at least a few will “accidentally” fall his way.
Serve it: Peeled (if waxed) and sliced thin.
🍌 Banana Parsley Frozen Bites
These are easy to make and fantastic after a romp in the yard. The parsley is great for fresh breath, and the banana makes it feel like dessert.
Recipe:
- 1 ripe banana, mashed
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
- Optional: plain yogurt (just a spoonful)
Mash everything together, spoon into silicone molds or an ice cube tray, and freeze until solid.
🌱 Zucchini Apple Biscuits
These spring biscuits are soft enough for older dogs but firm enough to carry around like prized possessions. Benji likes to show his off before eating them.
Recipe:
- 1 cup oat flour
- ½ cup shredded zucchini (squeeze out extra moisture)
- ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1 egg
Preheat oven to 325°F. Mix ingredients into a dough, roll out, and cut into fun shapes. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until edges are golden. Cool completely before serving.
🐐 Goat Milk Ice Cubes
This one’s simple. Goat milk is easier to digest than cow’s milk and can support gut health. Benji gets one cube after long walks.
Serve it: Pour plain goat milk into an ice cube tray, freeze, and store in a sealed container. One cube at a time, especially for smaller dogs.
A Few Quick Safety Tips:
- Always introduce new foods slowly and in small amounts.
- Avoid adding salt, sugar, spices, or oils.
- If your dog has food sensitivities, check with your vet before trying new ingredients.
- Not all fruits and veggies are dog-safe! Grapes, onions, and garlic are toxic.
Spring is a time for growth, sunshine, and fresh starts — and yes, fresh snacks. Benji thrives on routine, but he also perks up when something new lands in his bowl or on the porch step. Watching him enjoy a frozen banana treat in the sun feels like the perfect reward for making it through winter.
