Spring flowers in a field

Heck Yeah, It’s Spring

Heck yeah, it’s spring.

I’ve been waiting for this for months.

Usually, I don’t mind the slow wait for spring. I can settle into winter for a while, accept the darker days, and lean into the quiet. But this year felt different. The winter was long, dreary, and dang cold. Benji hunkered down through most of December and January, and honestly, so did I. We got a little stir crazy to say the least.

There are only so many short walks, hallway toy tosses, and dramatic stares out the window a dog and his person can take before cabin fever sets in.

The First Signs of Spring

But now? The daffodils are popping up. The air feels softer. The weather is warming up — at least by Michigan standards, and I’m seeing buds on the trees. Tiny signs, but enough to make me exhale.

Benji knows, too.

He knows that when the tennis shoes go on and I head toward the door, it means walkies. He perks up immediately, ready to inspect the neighborhood after a long winter indoors. And while I’d like to think he’s excited for movement and fresh air, I know at least part of the thrill is getting back to his spring social calendar, critter smells, sidewalk messages, and whatever urgent business requires sniffing one patch of grass for five full minutes.

A Season That Feels Like Relief

Spring feels like possibility.

Not in the loud, “reinvent your life” kind of way. More in the quiet, hopeful way. Open the windows. Wash the dog blankets. Stay outside a little longer. Let the sun hit your face. Notice that your body, and your dog’s body, are waking up again.

This season always reminds me that life returns in small ways first. A bud. A bird song. Muddy paws by the back door.

And of course, spring calls for a fresh little treat.

Benji’s Spring Berry Bites

These are simple, dog-friendly, and perfect for warmer days ahead.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • ½ cup blueberries
  • ½ cup strawberries, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened applesauce

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a bowl and stir gently.
  2. Spoon into silicone molds or an ice cube tray.
  3. Freeze for 3–4 hours, or until firm.
  4. Serve as a cool spring treat.

Store in the freezer and hand one out after a walk or a little backyard sunbathing.

Welcoming the Season Slowly

Spring doesn’t have to mean rushing. It doesn’t have to mean doing everything at once. Sometimes it’s enough to simply notice that the world is softening again.

And after a winter like this one, that feels like more than enough.
