The light is starting to come back.
Not dramatically. Not all at once.
Just a few extra minutes in the afternoon where the house doesn’t feel like evening at 4:30.
Benji notices it before I do.
He lingers by the window a little longer, watches the birds more seriously, and seems less convinced that dinner should be served at what used to be nighttime an hour ago. The air still bites, the ground is still frozen, but something has shifted.
Late winter always feels like the longest stretch — not quite winter, definitely not spring. The motivation isn’t fully back, the energy is waking up slowly, and everything feels in-between.
So we bake.
Nothing fancy. Just a small kitchen ritual to mark that we made it this far through the dark season.
While the oven warms the house, Benji supervises closely, convinced every ingredient is for him specifically. The smell alone seems to lift both our moods. Simple routines help signal change before the weather officially does.
These aren’t celebration treats.
They’re we’re getting there treats.
Little reminders that longer walks, open windows, and muddy paws are coming soon.
Until then — warm kitchen, soft light, and a dog waiting patiently in the exact spot crumbs might fall.

Savor the Simple Moments
Maybe that’s really what this season is about — not doing more, but noticing more. The light returning a few minutes at a time, a dog waiting patiently by the oven, the quiet comfort of caring for each other in small ways. Spring will get here soon enough, but for now, this in-between space feels just right… especially when shared with a hopeful nose and a freshly baked biscuit.
