When the Light Starts to Return (and Soup Feels Like a Promise)

Today it’s above 20 degrees for the first time in three weeks.
That might not sound like much, but after endless gray days, stiff fingers, and rushed walks, it feels like a small miracle.

Benji noticed it before I did. His steps were lighter. His nose lingered a little longer in the air. I didn’t rush him back inside as quickly. The light feels different when winter loosens its grip, even just a little.

This time of year always feels like a pause between seasons. Not quite winter, not even close to spring, but something in between. The days stretch by a few minutes. The sun hangs around longer. You start to believe, quietly, that spring really is coming.

We’re not doing anything dramatic to celebrate. No big changes. No long walks yet. Just small comforts. Windows cracked open for fresh air. Extra blankets folded instead of piled. And soup simmering on the stove.

Lately, I’ve been making what I call a spring-is-coming soup. Nothing fancy, just nourishing, warm, and hopeful.

Veggie Soup

Simple Spring-Is-Coming Soup

A little something for me:

  • Bone broth or vegetable broth
  • Chopped carrots and celery
  • A handful of greens (kale or spinach)
  • Garlic and olive oil
  • Salt, pepper, and whatever herbs you have

Let it simmer slowly. Let the house smell like comfort.

Benji gets his version too, plain broth with soft veggies on top of his food. We both approve.

Winter asks a lot of us. Short days. Cold mornings. Less movement. More patience. But moments like today remind me that it doesn’t last forever.

The light is coming back.
The air is shifting.
And spring…quietly…is on its way.
