There’s something about autumn that invites you to slow down. The air cools, the evenings come sooner, and everything feels softer around the edges. For Benji and me, this season means longer walks, quieter moments, and a little everyday magic hidden in the fading light.
The weather is finally cooling down. Time to close things up, clear out the garden, pick the zillion butternut squash I found, and put things to bed outside.
It’s not quite frigid yet, but there’s definitely a chill in the air. Now that the pavement isn’t scorching or frozen, it’s time for us to venture outside more. And of course, I have to take Benji across the street to see the animated Halloween decorations — which he gives a very wide berth. He’s not falling for those glowing ghosts. Down the street, he tries to claim the cornstalk display as his own. Hey, he owns the neighborhood, after all.
Boots, jacket, leash, and collar — those are his essentials. He’s a delicate flower, and proud of it. Rain is still a no-go, and when it’s damp, his tinkle breaks are quick and efficient.
But when the air is crisp and the sky fades from gold to violet, we linger. There’s something magical about that in-between time — the soft hum of the neighborhood, the smell of fallen leaves, the way the day exhales. Porch lights flicker on one by one, and the faint scent of someone’s dinner drifts through the air. Benji’s ears perk up at every rustle. He walks with that confident little prance that says, this is my block.
These twilight walks have become our ritual — a chance to breathe, to shake off the day, to notice the small things. Benji stops often, sniffing every invisible story written along our path. I take the cue and slow down too. The world feels gentler at this hour, like it’s inviting us to pause before the rush of tomorrow.
When we get home, there’s always a reward waiting — for him, a treat; for me, a cup of tea and maybe a quiet moment before the evening settles in. It’s a rhythm I’ve come to love — small routines that turn ordinary nights into something peaceful and whole.
🍪 Benji’s Favorite Peanut Butter Treats
A simple, cozy recipe for those cool nights when you want to spoil your favorite walking buddy:
Ingredients
- 1 cup oat flour (you can blend rolled oats to make your own)
- ½ cup creamy peanut butter (xylitol-free)
- 1 ripe banana, mashed
- 1 egg
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix peanut butter, mashed banana, and egg until smooth.
- Add oat flour gradually until a dough forms.
- Roll out and cut into shapes — or just spoon onto a baking sheet for “rustic” treats.
- Bake for 15–18 minutes, until firm and lightly golden.
- Cool completely before serving (Benji insists on this step).
Store in an airtight container for up to a week — if they last that long.
As the days get shorter and the nights stretch a little longer, I find comfort in these small rituals — a quiet walk, a wagging tail, and the smell of peanut butter baking in the kitchen. Sometimes, that’s all the magic you need.
