From Sweltering to Sweaters: Welcoming Fall with Your Pup

Here in Michigan, the shift came quickly. One week we were sweating through 90-degree days, and the next, mornings dipped into the high 40s. The air feels crisp, sweaters are making their way out of storage, and my garden is slowing its pace. The last of the tomatoes, peppers, and carrots are coming in, and the pumpkins are ripening just in time to remind me that yes, fall is really here.

With the cooler temperatures on the horizon, I always start thinking about how this change affects both me and my dog, Benji. Bare bellies and pitty feet aren’t exactly made for chilly mornings, so keeping him warm, safe, and comfortable is at the top of my list. But fall also brings plenty of opportunities to celebrate the season together, whether that’s in the kitchen, the garden, or out on a long walk surrounded by crunchy leaves.

Cool Weather Considerations for Dogs

If your dog is anything like mine, cooler mornings mean shorter potty breaks. Dogs with less fur or sensitive paws often feel the chill faster than we realize. A lightweight sweater or jacket can make a big difference, especially for those early morning walks. And don’t forget about paws—damp, cold grass or sidewalks can be uncomfortable, so keep an eye out for signs of sensitivity.

Another consideration? Energy levels. Some dogs thrive in the cooler weather and get a sudden burst of playfulness, while others are reluctant to leave the blanket pile. Adjust your walks and routines accordingly and remember that hydration is still important even when it’s not hot out.

Harvest Time Goodies

One of my favorite things about fall is the abundance of fresh produce. Pumpkins, carrots, and apples are in their prime—and the good news is that many fall fruits and veggies can be shared with your pup in moderation. Pumpkins, for example, are excellent for digestion and can be mixed right into your dog’s food (just plain pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling!). Carrots make great crunchy snacks, and apples (cored and seedless) are naturally sweet treats.

This time of year, my kitchen smells like roasted veggies, warm soups, and baked goods. And since Benji gives me those big, expectant eyes every time I’m cooking, I like to whip up a few dog-friendly recipes he can enjoy too.

Fall Recipe for Dogs: Pumpkin & Carrot Bites

These homemade treats are simple, healthy, and perfect for using up some of that garden or farmers market bounty.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree (unsweetened, canned or fresh cooked)
  • ½ cup shredded carrots
  • 2 cups oat flour
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce

Instructions:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a bowl, mix pumpkin puree, shredded carrots, egg, and applesauce until smooth.
  • Slowly add the flour, stirring until it forms a dough.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut into shapes with a cookie cutter (or just cut small squares).
  • Place treats on a lined baking sheet and bake for 25–30 minutes, until firm and lightly golden.
  • Let cool completely before serving to your pup. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

Benji loves these crunchy little bites, and I love knowing he’s getting something wholesome that celebrates the season.

Embracing Fall Together

Fall may mean shorter days and a reminder that winter is around the corner, but it’s also a time for slowing down, enjoying the harvest, and cozying up with our dogs. Whether you’re taking long walks under colorful trees, baking up seasonal goodies, or just pulling on sweaters together, it’s a season full of small joys.

So as the weather cools and the garden winds down, I’ll be stocking my pantry, pulling out the blankets, and baking treats—for both me and Benji. After all, fall is best enjoyed with a warm heart, a cozy sweater, and a wagging tail at your side.
