Last week, I talked about getting your home ready for fireworks season—how to create a calm, safe space for your dog when the booms and bangs begin after dark. But what about the daytime fun?
This week, I want to talk about the other side of July 4th: the afternoon barbeques, friends and family coming over, and the parade of snacks and drinks that magically appear throughout the day. It’s a great time to celebrate, but if you’ve got a dog, it also comes with a few extra responsibilities.
Benji is a total people-pup, but even he gets overwhelmed when there’s a crowd, food on every surface, and someone forgets to close the back door. So let’s talk about how to keep your pup safe, happy, and out of trouble while you entertain.
Door Dashes & Sneaky Exits
One of the biggest risks during a gathering is your dog slipping out an open door. Guests may not be as mindful as you are—and that back door leading to a not-so-secure yard can easily become an escape route.
Pro tip:
Set clear boundaries with guests right away. Put up a sign by the door:
“Please watch for the dog—he’s fast!”
If your dog tends to bolt, consider baby gates, x-pens, or even giving your pup a comfy crate or safe room where they can chill without all the chaos.
BBQ Foods: What Not to Feed Fido
Let’s talk food.
Because if there’s one thing dogs are known for, it’s their ability to steal snacks when no one’s looking. And guests—especially the dog-loving ones—might think they’re being sweet by sharing scraps.
Here’s a short list of foods commonly found at BBQs that your dog should NOT eat:
- Bones (especially cooked ones – they can splinter)
- Corn on the cob (choking hazard)
- Onions, garlic, and chives (toxic)
- Grapes and raisins (super toxic)
- Chocolate desserts
- Alcohol (no beer for Benji!)
- Fatty meats like sausage or ribs (can cause pancreatitis)
Even “safe” foods like plain grilled chicken should be given in moderation—and only if you trust no seasoning or sauce is involved. What’s harmless to us can cause a very expensive vet visit for your pup.
Watch the Table, and the Trash
Aside from the food itself, there’s also packaging, skewers, toothpicks, and greasy paper plates that could easily become a midnight snack if left unattended.
Benji’s always my little sous chef in the kitchen. If something hits the floor, he’s right there—but he knows the rule: no taste-testing unless I say it’s okay!
Make sure:
- Trash bins are covered or out of reach.
- Toothpicks, skewers, and plastic utensils are tossed immediately.
- Leftovers are cleared quickly, not left on low tables or patio furniture.
Guests and Overstimulation
Even the most social dogs can get overwhelmed with too much activity, loud conversations, and new faces.
If your dog starts panting heavily, pacing, hiding, or barking more than usual, it might be time for a break.
Set up a quiet space inside with their favorite blanket, water bowl, and maybe some calming music or a white noise machine. If your pup likes puzzle toys or lick mats, this is a great time to use them.
Don’t Forget to Check ID Tags and Microchips
With doors opening and closing and people coming and going, it’s smart to double-check your dog’s ID tag before the festivities begin. Make sure the info is up to date and legible. If your dog is microchipped, confirm that the registration is current.
A Final Word from Benji
Benji wants me to remind you that while people are laughing, eating, and clinking glasses—he’s just trying to keep track of what’s going on. He doesn’t mean to get into trouble… it’s just that hot dog on the edge of the table smells really good.
So keep your pups in mind this 4th of July—not just at night when the fireworks start, but all day long when the party’s in full swing.
And if you’re not sure what’s safe to share, the best option is always to have dog-friendly treats ready so guests can safely spoil your four-legged friend. (Benji highly recommends Stella & Chewy’s Wild Weenies. 5 stars. Would bark again.)
