Happiness in the Smallest Moments

Snow days and lazy Sundays are perfect for rest and rejuvenation. As someone who often works seven days a week between my job and side gigs, I know how important it is to hit pause. Constantly being “on” does more harm than good, and by December, I decided to prioritize some much-needed “me time” in the new year.

This time is simple—it’s about doing whatever feels good in the moment. Maybe I nap, tackle laundry, or dive into a good murder mystery. Whatever it is, it leaves me feeling recharged and better for it. And as an added bonus, Benji benefits from a more relaxed me, too.

When I think back to Sundays as a kid, they were all about family: church, Sunday dinner, then visiting grandparents for a second round of food and love. These days, I don’t have those kinds of Sundays anymore, but I’ve realized I need to reclaim my mornings, at the very least. Of course, I wanted Benji to be part of my newfound tradition, so I set out to get him a cozy new bed—a gift from “Santa.”

After much research, I ordered a sofa-style bed from FunnyFuzzy. It looked perfect in the ads, and although it was pricier than I’d hoped, I thought Benji deserved it. Unfortunately, the excitement faded fast when the bed finally arrived (a month late, no less). The XL size I’d ordered turned out to be barely a medium. Cue disappointment.

Benji, however, didn’t see the flaws I did. The moment I opened the package, he knew the bed was for him and couldn’t have been happier. His joy was contagious. Despite my frustrations, I accepted the company’s small refund and decided to let go of the disappointment. I placed the bed in the living room, and now it’s Benji’s favorite spot—small or not, it’s perfect to him.

This whole experience was a lesson in perspective. Sometimes, we focus so much on what we think things should be that we miss the happiness that’s right in front of us. Benji didn’t care about the size of the bed; he only saw the love and comfort it represented.

Now, our Sunday mornings are all about cozy pajamas, coffee, pancakes, and quiet moments. That too-small bed? It’s a reminder that happiness isn’t found in perfection but in the little things—like a pup who couldn’t be happier with what he has.

Enjoy the little moments in life!

Much love, Joan and Benji
