How I Discovered That Chicken Was Causing Benji’s Bad Breath
There is nothing worse than stinky dog breath…well I’m sure there is, but this was nasty!
As a pet parent, you’re always looking out for your dog’s health and well-being. For a while, something seemed off with Benji—his breath was terrible, to the point where I knew he needed a much-overdue dental procedure. I scheduled it right away, hoping it would be the solution to his persistent bad breath. While the dental was definitely necessary, I was surprised when the bad breath didn’t completely disappear. It wasn’t as bad as before, but every now and then, it would return.
That’s when I started paying closer attention to his diet. I realized his breath seemed worse after he ate meals with chicken, which had been an occasional staple in his diet. I hadn’t considered that it might be the cause of his lingering breath issues. After a bit of trial and error, I decided to eliminate chicken from his meals entirely, and within a short time, the improvement was noticeable. His breath finally started to smell fresh again, and I knew that chicken had been the culprit all along.
It made me realize how food sensitivities can show up in unexpected ways, like bad breath. We often think dental issues are the sole cause, but sometimes diet plays a bigger role than we realize.
Now, Benji is on a chicken-free diet, and his breath—and overall health—are so much better. If your dog is still dealing with bad breath even after a dental cleaning, it might be worth exploring their diet. You never know what you might discover!
