The Importance of Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids for Your Pet

Why does your pet need Omega-3 essential fatty acids? Many dry pet foods, often over-processed, lack adequate vitamins and minerals, leaving your pet with subpar nutrition.

The high heat used to process dry dog food destroys many nutrients, including Omega-3 essential fatty acids. Although these nutrients are often added back, their effectiveness diminishes over time, especially with longer shelf lives. Additionally, the synthetic versions added post-heating are generally less effective.

A Natural Solution: Sardines!

Adding sardines to your pet’s diet is an excellent way to boost their intake of Omega-3s, including DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). Sardines are a sustainable fish with low mercury levels, rich in highly absorbable essential fatty acids, protein, and a full range of trace minerals such as iodine, selenium, calcium, zinc, vitamin D, B12, and E. Consuming the whole fish, bones and all, provides exceptional mineral content.

Omega-3s can benefit your pet’s skin, allergies, kidney function, heart health, cognitive function, arthritis, and more!

How to Add Sardines to Your Pet’s Diet:

  • Look for wild-caught sardines packed in water, not tomato sauce or oil. My favorite brand is Wild Planet Wild Caught in water, no salt added.
  • Add a filet to your pet’s kibble a couple of times a week.
  • Use the can’s contents within a week, but they likely won’t last that long—pets love them!

Feel free to enjoy a few yourself! And as always, consult with your veterinarian before introducing any new foods or supplements to your pet’s diet.
