Since I’ve been traveling back to Ohio more frequently, I’ve had to board Benji while I’m away. I’ve never enrolled him in group daycare before, always opting for the ‘extra attention’ package so he could get his much-needed belly rubs and smooches, not to mention a nightly tuck-in.

When I picked Benji up from boarding at the beginning of July, I saw a dog in his run on the second floor looking down at all the play areas. My heart sank as I watched him watching the other dogs play. He looked longingly at the other dogs running around and having a great time.

I decided then and there to have him evaluated for group daycare, where he could be in boarding and still play with other dogs.

Well, this past Saturday was the day! Benji was so excited to go, and off we went.

He had a great time! The attendant came out and said he fit right in and was sniffing and running around with the other dogs.

I picked him up five hours later, exhausted and spent. He slept the whole way home. Poor guy was sore from all the activity, which is why I refer to him as my delicate little flower.

This morning, I saw why he had trouble walking: his paws were irritated and red from all the running around. I had to get him taken care of. I went to the medicine cabinet and found that I had nothing to wrap his paw. I had to run out to get vet wrap, antibiotic ointment, and gauze.

I was completely unprepared, not only for Benji but for me as well. I didn’t have anything but a box of band-aids and some peroxide.

First aid kits for pets and people are so important to have on hand. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way. I just ordered a First Aid Kit off of Amazon, and yes, I wish I had it sooner. This kit has everything I need to be prepared if something happens again. I also picked up Vet’s Best Aches+Pains, which seems to be handling some of the pain.

I will admit, I dropped the ball here, but lesson learned, and I’m grateful it wasn’t worse!

Just something to remember.  If the trauma or injury is more than a gauze patch wrapped with vet tape can handle, please get them to your veterinarian or urgent care vet facility.  There is no substitute for necessary care.

Apologies for being short, sweet and to the point with this post.  I’m going to do some Healing Touch for Animals on Benji.  More about that later.
