Fun Indoor Activities to Keep Your Dog Happy During Winter

Baby, it’s cold outside! For my little Benji, that means we don’t spend much time outdoors. My delicate little flower prefers to run out, do his thing, and dash back inside to snuggle under his favorite blanket. While I’ve tried dressing him up in a winter coat, he absolutely hates it.

Like people, dogs can get restless and even stir-crazy if they’re cooped up for too long. To keep our furry companions happy and engaged, it’s important to come up with fun indoor activities for those blustery winter days. If your pup is anything like Benji, who thrives on attention and engagement, these activities are sure to make the cold months more enjoyable for both of you!

1. Hide Treats in Puzzle Toys

Engaging your dog’s senses is a fantastic way to keep them entertained. Puzzle toys or treat-dispensing games challenge your pup’s mind and provide a satisfying reward. You can also hide small treats around the house and have your dog sniff them out like a treasure hunt. It’s great mental stimulation that will tire them out without even stepping outside.

2. Yoga with Your Dog

Does your dog love to “help” when you roll out your yoga mat? Benji insists on claiming half of the mat as his own, and his version of “assistance” often involves shoving toys in my face during downward dog! While it might sound chaotic, yoga can be a great bonding experience. Incorporate simple stretches for your dog, like gentle paw lifts or massages, or let them rest beside you while you practice. It’s a wonderful way to relax together.

3. Teach New Tricks or Practice Old Ones

Winter is the perfect time to work on training. Whether your dog is a pro at basic commands or just starting, spending time learning new tricks keeps their mind sharp and helps strengthen your bond. Teach them something fun like “spin,” “play dead,” or even practical skills like “clean up” where they put their toys back in their basket.

4. Treadmill Workouts

If you have a treadmill, consider training your dog to walk or run on it. It’s a safe and efficient way to burn off energy when it’s too cold to head outside. Start slow, using treats and encouragement to help them get used to the machine. Be sure to supervise them the entire time to ensure their safety.

5. Doggy Daycare

Sometimes, dogs just need to burn off energy with their friends. Many doggy daycares offer half- or full-day options where your pup can play and socialize in a safe, supervised environment. It’s a great way to keep them active while you run errands or catch up on work.

6. Indoor Fetch or Tug-of-War

If you have enough space, indoor fetch can be a blast. Use soft, lightweight toys to avoid breaking anything, and let your dog run up and down the hallway or across the living room. Tug-of-war is another fantastic option for a good workout and bonding time. Just be sure to play on a surface where your pup won’t slip.

7. Create an Obstacle Course

Turn your living room into a canine adventure zone! Use household items like chairs, cushions, and boxes to create a mini obstacle course. Guide your dog through tunnels, over jumps, and around obstacles using treats or their favorite toy. It’s a fun way to keep them physically and mentally stimulated.

8. Doggy Movie Night

Sometimes, it’s okay to just relax together. Snuggle up on the couch with your dog and watch some dog-themed movies or shows. Whether it’s a classic like 101 Dalmatians or something new, your pup will love spending quality time with you (and maybe sharing some popcorn, if it’s plain and unsalted).

9. Scent Games

Dogs have an incredible sense of smell, so why not put it to good use? Hide their favorite toy or a treat under a blanket or in one of three cups and let them figure out where it is. Scent games are a great way to keep their mind active and can be easily adjusted to suit your dog’s skill level.

10. Make Homemade Treats Together

If you’re someone who loves baking, why not include your pup in the fun? Spend an afternoon making homemade dog treats using healthy, dog-safe ingredients. Not only will your dog enjoy the delicious results, but the smell of baking treats will make your home feel even cozier.

A Time to Bond

Winter may limit outdoor adventures, but it’s also a season for closeness. Take this time to focus on strengthening your relationship with your dog through these fun and creative activities. Remember, your dog doesn’t care about the weather or fancy toys—they just want to spend time with you.

By keeping their minds and bodies engaged, you’ll help your pup stay happy, healthy, and calm all winter long. Plus, you’ll create memories that will last well beyond the season. Whether it’s a game of indoor fetch, a movie night, or a shared yoga session, these moments are what make winter special for you and your dog.

So, bundle up, enjoy the warmth of your home, and make this winter a time of joy and connection for you and your furry friend!
